Success is not the key to happiness.
Happiness is the key to success.
If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
Albert Schweitzer
Our journey through the world of work, at its best, involves transformation. Transformation occurs when we look at the same outer world we’ve been looking at, but through new eyes. I might even dare to say we are looking at the world through our hearts. Looking at the world from this perspective allows us to see possibilities where we formerly saw insurmountable obstacles.
This happens best when we love what we are doing and who we are working with. The secret we have often forgotten, however, is that we must love ourselves first before we can love anything or anyone else. Flourishing in this way is a high aspiration. For many of us, starting with myself, it has taken many years of making progress one week at a time.
Loving ourselves first is very different from being self-absorbed or selfish. It is honoring the magnificence in every human being, including ourselves. This involves looking for people’s innate goodness that is often hidden underneath their outer presentation. It is discovering the goodness within ourselves, owning our strengths and using them to contribute to the well-being of others. It also involves compassionate awareness of our own rough edges, with a commitment to never-ending improvement.
Our hearts are where we experience love. Learning to develop our hearts with a reflective practice is the most empowering way I know to shine our unique light in the world. Once we discover the possibilities that arise from our commitment to personal flourishing, we naturally look forward to experiencing more meaning in our work. More joyful connections with others soon follow.
