Effectiveness: Now More Than Ever
We know the economy is challenging us in new ways and it'll be awhile until it recovers. But perhaps that's the wrong attitude. Perhaps it's we who need to recover, not the "economy."
If we wait for things to change on the outside and it doesn't happen quickly enough, then our insides get more and more wound up. The alternative is to take our cue from the economic reorganization and use it as inspiration, or if you prefer, a gun to our heads that we reorganize ourselves. Holding on to old expectations in a new reality is more than counterproductive, it's "crazy making." Each time we get the next piece of unsettling news we swirl in our fears - or return to our highest intentions to expand our contribution and minimize the damage. Our highest intentions will work extremely well for awhile. But at some point we may need a stronger approach. We may need to surrender to the new reality and stop our attempts to "hold back the waterfall" from soaking us.
If you do reach the point of being soaked with an unstoppable set of external changes, then you are in a state of transition, as author William Bridges calls it. Once we let go of the old reality we enter into a "nowhere zone between two somewheres." We have lost the old reality, but can not yet see the new reality that is coming. This "in between time" is not a time for wallowing. Instead, we must reflect and deal with our emotions about what we have lost. If we do that work and accept our new circumstances, we can move toward the new reality effectively. We can find gratitude for what we still have that is enduring. We can deepen our reliance on the character values that are the cornerstone of our success in any reality. Doing so allows us to emerge stronger. Our vision and creative adaptation begin to kick in. We become inventors with fresh ideas about how to realign our businesses with value propositions that match the
new reality as it emerges.
If you take this on effectively, you will have transformed our economic reorganization into your personal spiritual reorganization. You will tap into that vast reservoir of resources that humanity has always used to get through difficult situations. You will strengthen your personal effectiveness, and be more than ready to take advantage of the new opportunities that will surely come along. Because the external circumstances will eventually change. The economy will get better. We just don't know when or what it will look like when it does.
But the big question to focus on now is this: who will you be when it happens? And that will largely depend upon who you are being as you lead yourself and your company through this period of transition.
